Chairman, Bangladesh Migrants Foundation (BMF)

Joynal Abedin Joy is a distinguished migrant rights advocate, social activist, and former migrant worker who has devoted his life to promoting the rights, welfare, and dignity of Bangladeshi migrant workers.

Born in Vodrasena Village of Manda Upazila, Naogaon District, Bangladesh, Mr. Joy completed his early education at Gobindapur High School and later pursued higher studies at New Government Degree College, Rajshahi. In addition to his academic education, he received professional training in information technology, digital photography, and community development.

In 2007, Mr. Joy migrated to Malaysia through a recruiting agency in pursuit of better economic opportunities. However, upon arrival, he became a victim of deception, human trafficking, and severe labor exploitation. Instead of the promised employment, he and many other Bangladeshi workers endured inhumane working conditions, wage deprivation, food shortages, and physical and psychological abuse.

Rather than remaining silent, Mr. Joy emerged as a courageous leader among the affected workers. He organized fellow migrants, documented abuses, engaged with the media, and led advocacy efforts to demand justice. His leadership contributed significantly to raising national and international awareness about the exploitation of Bangladeshi migrant workers and helped secure compensation and partial justice for many victims.

After returning to Bangladesh, Mr. Joy dedicated himself to migrant rights advocacy and community development. He founded the IMA Research Foundation and served as its Chairman, working to support migrant workers and their families. He subsequently collaborated with national and international organizations, including ActionAid Bangladesh and Winrock International’s Action for Combating Trafficking in Persons (ACT) Program, where he played an important role in migrant protection, anti-trafficking initiatives, rehabilitation, and awareness-building activities.

Currently, Mr. Joy serves as the Chairman of the Bangladesh Migrants Foundation (BMF). Under his leadership, the organization works to promote safe migration, migrant welfare, legal assistance, anti-trafficking initiatives, and the empowerment of migrant workers and their families.

Driven by his own lived experience, Mr. Joy continues to advocate for policies and programs that ensure migration remains safe, ethical, and dignified. His vision is a world where every migrant worker enjoys equal rights, protection, respect, and opportunities for a better future.

জয়নাল আবেদীন জয় একজন বিশিষ্ট প্রবাসী অধিকারকর্মী, সমাজসেবক এবং প্রবাসফেরত কর্মী, যিনি বাংলাদেশি অভিবাসী ও প্রবাসী শ্রমিকদের অধিকার, নিরাপত্তা, মর্যাদা এবং কল্যাণ নিশ্চিত করার লক্ষ্যে দীর্ঘদিন ধরে কাজ করে যাচ্ছেন।

নওগাঁ জেলার মান্দা উপজেলার ভদ্রসেনা গ্রামে জন্মগ্রহণকারী জয়নাল আবেদীন জয় শিক্ষাজীবন শুরু করেন গোবিন্দপুর উচ্চ বিদ্যালয়ে। পরবর্তীতে তিনি রাজশাহীর নিউ গভর্নমেন্ট ডিগ্রি কলেজে উচ্চশিক্ষা গ্রহণ করেন। পাশাপাশি তথ্যপ্রযুক্তি, ডিজিটাল ফটোগ্রাফি, কমিউনিটি ডেভেলপমেন্ট এবং বিভিন্ন কারিগরি বিষয়ে প্রশিক্ষণ লাভ করেন।

২০০৭ সালে উন্নত জীবনের আশায় একটি রিক্রুটিং এজেন্সির মাধ্যমে মালয়েশিয়ায় অভিবাসন করেন তিনি। কিন্তু সেখানে গিয়ে প্রতারণা, মানবপাচার এবং শ্রম শোষণের নির্মম বাস্তবতার মুখোমুখি হন। প্রতিশ্রুত চাকরির পরিবর্তে তাকে এবং তার সঙ্গে থাকা বহু বাংলাদেশি কর্মীকে অমানবিক পরিবেশে কাজ করতে বাধ্য করা হয়। বেতন বঞ্চনা, খাদ্য সংকট, শারীরিক ও মানসিক নির্যাতনসহ বিভিন্ন ধরনের নিপীড়নের শিকার হতে হয় তাদের।

এই প্রতিকূল পরিস্থিতিতে তিনি নীরব না থেকে ক্ষতিগ্রস্ত কর্মীদের সংগঠিত করেন এবং তাদের অধিকার প্রতিষ্ঠার আন্দোলনে নেতৃত্ব দেন। তার সাহসী নেতৃত্ব, গণমাধ্যমের সঙ্গে কার্যকর যোগাযোগ এবং ধারাবাহিক আন্দোলনের ফলে বাংলাদেশি প্রবাসী শ্রমিকদের দুর্দশা দেশ-বিদেশে ব্যাপকভাবে আলোচিত হয়। এর ফলে ক্ষতিগ্রস্ত অনেক কর্মীর জন্য ক্ষতিপূরণ ও ন্যায়বিচার নিশ্চিত করার পথ উন্মুক্ত হয়।

বাংলাদেশে ফিরে এসে তিনি প্রবাসী অধিকার আন্দোলনকে আরও সুসংগঠিত ও শক্তিশালী করার লক্ষ্যে IMA Research Foundation প্রতিষ্ঠা করেন এবং এর চেয়ারম্যান হিসেবে দায়িত্ব পালন করেন। পরবর্তীতে তিনি ActionAid Bangladesh এবং Winrock International-এর Action for Combating Trafficking in Persons (ACT) Program-এর সঙ্গে যুক্ত হয়ে মানবপাচার প্রতিরোধ, নিরাপদ অভিবাসন, অভিবাসী সুরক্ষা, পুনর্বাসন এবং সচেতনতা বৃদ্ধিমূলক কার্যক্রমে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ অবদান রাখেন।

বর্তমানে তিনি বাংলাদেশ মাইগ্রেন্টস ফাউন্ডেশন (BMF)-এর চেয়ারম্যান হিসেবে দায়িত্ব পালন করছেন। তার নেতৃত্বে প্রতিষ্ঠানটি নিরাপদ ও নৈতিক অভিবাসন, প্রবাসী কল্যাণ, মানবপাচার প্রতিরোধ, আইনি সহায়তা, নীতিগত সংস্কার এবং অভিবাসী কর্মীদের ক্ষমতায়নের লক্ষ্যে কাজ করছে।

নিজের জীবনের বাস্তব অভিজ্ঞতা থেকে অনুপ্রাণিত হয়ে জয়নাল আবেদীন জয় এমন একটি সমাজ ও বিশ্ব গড়ার স্বপ্ন দেখেন, যেখানে প্রতিটি অভিবাসী শ্রমিক মর্যাদা, নিরাপত্তা, ন্যায্য অধিকার এবং উন্নয়নের সমান সুযোগ পাবে। তিনি বিশ্বাস করেন, নিরাপদ অভিবাসন কেবল একটি অধিকার নয়, বরং মানবিক মর্যাদা ও সামাজিক ন্যায়বিচারের একটি অপরিহার্য অংশ।

চেয়ারম্যানের বার্তা

“আমি নিজে একজন প্রতারিত ও নির্যাতিত প্রবাসী কর্মী ছিলাম। সেই অভিজ্ঞতা আমাকে শিখিয়েছে যে সচেতনতা, ঐক্য এবং ন্যায়বিচারের জন্য সংগ্রামই পরিবর্তনের সবচেয়ে শক্তিশালী হাতিয়ার। আমি বিশ্বাস করি, প্রতিটি অভিবাসী শ্রমিক মর্যাদা, নিরাপত্তা এবং ন্যায্য অধিকার পাওয়ার যোগ্য। সেই লক্ষ্যেই আমি আজীবন কাজ করে যেতে চাই। আমাদের সম্মিলিত প্রচেষ্টায় এমন একটি ভবিষ্যৎ গড়ে তোলা সম্ভব, যেখানে অভিবাসন হবে নিরাপদ, মর্যাদাপূর্ণ এবং শোষণমুক্ত।”
